My Project

A "community read" is an enriching experience where a whole grade level reads the same book and has exciting and meaningful discussions - both inside and outside of class - about the text and how it connects to their lives, our world, and social justice issues that they care about. At New School, we are excited to be planning an 8th grade community read of the book The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater, which tells the compelling true story of an agender teen who was set on fire by another teen on an Oakland bus.

Our 8th graders are curious, mature, deep thinkers, and we know they will benefit greatly from diving into this book's important themes of race, class, gender and the criminal justice system.

They have been eager to read and discuss more texts about LGBTQ+ characters and relevant social justice issues. We are excited to embark on this journey with them, and cannot wait to hear the incredible insights, connections and reflections we know they will share!

Thank you in advance for any donation you can make to help us reach a goal of providing each student with their own copy of the text to read. We will keep the books and be able to use them again with our future 8th graders, so it's a gift that will keep on giving for years to come!
