My Students

My students are from a small town in the Appalachian Mountains. They are great students who are happy to be at school. School is the safe place for these kids. They have great problem solving and hands-on skills, they just need to be focused and encouraged.

Our community has been stricken by the loss of jobs and the socioeconomic statuses have plummeted.

Our free and reduced lunch program has grown to over 80%. Most of our students come from broken homes and homes stricken by poverty. With this said, they are still eager to learn and rise above their situations.

My Project

I am asking for supplies to have visuals to go along with 8th grade science. The casting medium, fossil hunt kit and brushes are to explore fossils so the students can see the difference in the types of fossils. They will be able to create their own molds and casts from fossils I have or objects they find. The blood type kit is to help give a visual when we talk about the genetics of blood typing. The balancing equation set is to help the students get a visual of balancing equations and the periodic table kit is to help them understand how the table is arranged. This is introduced in 8th grade and is very difficult to understand.

Students need hands-on activities to help them get a grasp on concepts that are hard to understand.

These supplies will help them do just that. These supplies will help the students have a visual reminder of what they are learning about to help them have a more in-depth understanding.
