I seek for my classroom to be a creative place for students through the vehicle of science education. A place where it is safe to ask questions about the natural world and a place where students feel empowered to solve with their creativity and innovative thought.
My students are typically a rambunctious group who are gearing up for life beyond middle school.
They have big dreams and aspirations, but don't always see where the typical school curriculum will get them to reach those aspirations. My school is rising in achievement in spite of some recent history of underachievement.
The Department of the Environment in our city has lofty goals that they want all students to experience related to environmental literacy. I want these goals to happen for my students. These materials will help my students learn more about alternative energy, be inspired by William Kamkwaba's story in The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and maintain a digital portfolio of their findings during investigations. By the end of the first quarter when this project is complete, students will be creating their own device or tool that helps reduce energy use in a particular sector of their life. Specifically, the book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, will be used as a research tool and read aloud for students throughout the unit. The Alternative Energy SnapCircuit kits will be used to experience alternative energy forms and do creation and prototyping and their tools or devices to reduce energy use. The HP chromebooks will be used to do research and collect findings.
I was totally inspired when I read William Kamkwaba's story.
Although this unit was already planned with some other teachers in my district, I was amazed to find a book that could show my students that no matter what your circumstance is, you can find solutions that can change the world. These resources will help me get to proving to my students and watching them do just that: change the world, one community at a time.
