This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an exceptional group of 7th, 9th and 10th graders who come from a very diverse group of neighborhoods around New York City. The majority are from Brooklyn, and many are low-income, as is the bulk of our school.
As students go, this particular group is incredibly inquisitive and thoughtful.
For the first time in my career I will be teaching students for a second year in a row, and I could not be more excited. The excitement they showed as they participated in labs, grappled with the "big questions" of each unit, and the dedication they showed to inquiry-based thinking was inspiring to see.
My Project
Please help my middle schoolers work with the Billion Oyster Project! We are involved in this amazing ecosystem restoration project, run through the New York Harbor Foundation, that is working to increase the number of oysters to 1 billion over the course of 20 years. Oysters, whose numbers have fallen rapidly across the state, are essential to the health of our water systems, by filtering water, providing habitat for other marine organisms, and more. Students and teachers all across New York City are working to monitor oyster growth through trips to individual oyster stations. (More information can be found here: https://www.billionoysterproject.org/about/) In order to participate, we need to purchase the items that will help us collect our data!
Participation in the Billion Oyster Project will help the waterways around our city, but will also provide my students an opportunity to engage in real-world data collection and analysis.
Students will travel to our oyster site multiple times during the school year. While there, they will analyze the growth of new oysters, as well as the health of the surrounding body of water and marine plant and animal life in and around the oyster restoration site.
