This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We would like to start a youth basketball league that promotes reading together as a focal point. We have 8 feeder elementary schools that we want to involve in this project. The high school athletes at Lanier will be coaching and reading the books with the students together weekly for 5 weeks. The books focus on athletics (to peak interest), to show our students that reading can be fun when they find the right book.

Our program runs for 5 weeks, each week will consist of 1 chapter read together, 1 practice together, 1 game together, and in the fifth week at the final day of games there will be a gallery walk and blooms spheres from each elementary school about the book they are reading.

We will have 8 elementary schools and 4 books. Two high school students and 1 high school coach will be leading the reading practices to provide role models for our students. We want to build the community by investing in literacy with our youth.
