Our 6th grade classroom encompasses students from a multitude of countries including but not limited to Mexico, Iraq, India, Bangladesh, Micronesia, Samoa, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan. Our school is of the highest poverty range, meaning that our students face a wide range of challenges outside of school, but we work extremely hard to ensure that they experience routine, positive behavior management, lots of love and care, and consistent academic challenge while they are at school.
Despite some very challenging situations in their outside of school lives, this group of students is extremely eager to learn, grow, and develop awareness about the world around them.
They are passionate about so many topics, and get very excited about reading new books, being exposed to multicultural authors, and discovering multiple themes or life lessons in books, articles, songs, and videos. Therefore, I am hoping to expose them to an art form which I don't believe any have seen before: theater. The Seattle Children's Theater is playing "Little Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience!" which would allow these kids to experience the magic of theatre for the first time in their lives.
My Project
These students work their hardest every single day in my Reading and Writing Class, reading books while searching for symbols, themes, lessons, and so much more. They engage wholeheartedly in book clubs, respectfully working their hardest to challenge each other's learning.
Unfortunately, they do not have the means to experience further education outside of the classroom, so I think that seeing a play would be an ideal way for them to apply their learnings in literacy towards a completely new medium.
""Little Mole Rat" is a high-energy production that explores the theme of individuality and being oneself, which is something these kids would really benefit from in the midst of the troubles that many of them face. They will have so much fun experiencing a musical and getting absorbed in the escapism that is the art of theater!
