My Students
Our student population is racially diverse. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a very transient student population. Over 50% of my class comes and goes during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them.
My sixth graders live in an area that is a pocket of poverty and they are handicapped by a lack of resources.
They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. The public library that was across the street closed several years ago. As a result, the majority of students do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.
All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, and many of them are the children of deployed military personnel. Our school is not a Title I school, but my students have needs that are not being met by our school. They are wonderful kids, and they deserve a chance.
My Project
My sixth graders live in a nation of immigrants, some of them have recently arrived in this country, others know someone who immigrated to this country but all of them need to understand the contemporary issues in America. Our classroom library does not have any materials they can read about modern problems in democracy.
My students need current, thought provoking books on a variety of reading levels and our school can't afford to supply them.
Please help!
I am asking for thirty copies of Long Walk to Water and assorted fiction and nonfiction books about difficult contemporary topics so that I can create a unit on 21st century problems.
I plan to create research/literature circles and divide my class into small group of students. Each of the groups will be reading a different book based on their reading level. They will have class time to read alone, with a partner, or with audio support. Then they will respond to a Journal prompt in writing and discuss their response with their group.
