This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 6th-grade students come from a small, high-poverty city in the Coachella Valley. My class is the only 6th grade Dual Language class in our elementary school and has been a part of the bilingual program since Kindergarten. In fact, I was their kindergarten teacher as well and I am excited to help them finish their elementary dual language experience.
Not only do my students come from high-poverty households but they are also the second 6th-grade class to complete our school's dual language program.
Our school is over 100 years old and is the center of the community with over 90% of our students being English Language Learners (with Spanish being their first language) as well as migrant students of parents that work in the agriculture of the Coachella Valley. Because of our low-income population, new school supplies, such as tables and desks are usually not a priority and are not generally updated.
My Project
I will use this kidney table daily for small group instruction in math and language arts. Not all students learn the same, and some students need to work with the teacher in a small group so that they can better grasp the material. This table will help students write out the math problems, grammar sentences, spelling, and any other area in which they are struggling. Even at-level students will benefit from this table as they will be able to use it to work independently or in group projects. Volunteers can also use this table as they work with students. I'm excited for all the possibilities!
