My students are 6th and 7th graders who are excited about STEM! Our school is a NYC Title I public school in Brooklyn and we are in our second academic year.
This is the first year we are offering our students access to an in-class library of STEM-themed books, where students ca choose their own books to "rent," read and enjoy.
When I think of my students I smile because they are tenacious and eager to "do" science and engineering, and also read about STEM independently. They want to learn by reading non-fiction STEM books, but right now, our library is lacking age-appropriate books. That's why I need your help!
My Project
Currently, I have a designated space in my classroom as well as a small bookcase dedicated to our 6th Grade STEM Library. Students have requested STEM books related to Chemistry, Forensics, Green-Engineering, and Physics. The materials that I am requesting are sets of STEM-themed, non-fiction, age-appropriate books that will not only just fill the shelves of the bookcase, but will fill 6th graders (high achieving students, students with disabilities, and also English language learners) with motivation, STEM content, and the love of reading. The idea is to get students to want to read more. After each book that is read, students will have a chance to investigate and research the science/technology that drives the story. Then, they will be offered the chance to present the science content that they learned to their classmates by designing experiments or demonstrations.
Your donation is going to put books on the shelf of our Science Library, and will give economically disadvantaged students the chance to close the achievement gap in reading and also in STEM.
My students are naturally curious and chose to attend a STEM-themed middle school, so I must make sure that I am offering chances for them to independently delve further into areas of STEM that interest them through reading!
