This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of the students receive free lunch. My school is located in a very low-income community. Most of the students come from immigrant families, and are also refugees. Due to the lack of funding, I am not able to provide my students with all the technology and devices a classroom in 2022 deserves. We are trying to improve test scores and prepare for the new Common Core assessments, but we do not have the resources we need. My students are wonderful and work extremely hard. Our classroom has been lucky enough to receive many new books from generous donors for our classroom library, but our checkout system is old and disorganized.
Our classroom needs a small technology update to keep our classroom library organized.
Being a low-income school, we do not have access to extra computers. The pandemic caused many of our computers to be lost or broken and now we are without the basics that we need to help our students.
My Project
The love of reading is important for my students' success. As we are finally back to learning in person, my students are finally able to check out books from our classroom library. They are finally able to feel the joy of reading from an actual paperback novel, not just a screen. Our library is disorganized and it makes it hard to find a great book to read.
I want my students to have a love for reading, but our library checkout system is making checking out books an inconvenient and time-consuming task.
We need technology to streamline the checkout from an online system so that students can check out books quickly and easily so reading can happen immediately! A printer to create labels to organize our library and print student work will help our classroom greatly.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
