My students need materials for our end of the year archaeological dig where they will practice using historical thinking skills, acting like real archaeologists in the field.
My students are dreamers, they are driven by goals, passion and strength. I share the great quote from Harriet Tubman with my students every year, " Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."
This quote is a direct reflection of every single student at my school.
Regardless of the trials and tribulations they may be facing at home, or even during the school day they show their perseverance and push through it to achieve their dreams.
My students are kind and compassionate. You can see this by their everyday actions. They help clean up trash after lunch in order to help keep our school campus beautiful. They take pride and ownership of their school. When I think of our students, I simply smile because I really do get to work with some of the best students. Rarely do you find students who are self motivated towards their own success at such a young age, but my dreamers have goals they want to achieve and action plans to achieve them. I could not be more proud of them!
My Project
Our students will be using the sand requested to participate in their own archaeological dig. In the sand we will hide different “fossils” of an Ancient Civilization created by our Social Studies department! The fish nets will be used to hang on our “boat” prop for students to analyze and determine the different weather within the civilization. Students use these materials to practice using their historical thinking skills in a fun, outdoor learning activity. They get the chance to analyze artifacts and texts from an ancient civilization in order to determine what life in that place may have been like.
During the dig, students will make inferences, translate materials, interpret charts and graphs, analyze artifacts, and use chronological thinking at an archaeological site on the field.
Students continually report that they enjoy learning in this setting. One student wrote, "My favorite thing about the dig is that we got to learn more. We could find things in the sand and feel like real archaeologists."
