My Students

My 5th grade students are the absolute best and are so deserving after the hard work they put in within the classroom. They are so passionate about so many different things: sports, science, current events, reading, and helping others. It's so great to see their passions come alive through various projects and their writing.

As a majority of my students come from low income homes, I strive to provide the most for my students.

I want to continue giving them experiences that they can grow from and develop stronger passions. Along with experiences in the classroom, one way I try to do this is simply by providing a diverse classroom library. My students live in a small town in Illinois, and books allow them to experience a world unknown to them.

My Project

A subscription to Scholastic News will make a difference in my students' learning as they are continuously wanting to know what is going on in the world. Sometimes news outlets don't provide information/ facts in kid friendly language. Scholastic News could engage students who might stray from nonfiction as they could have past experience with it being "boring".

Many of the stories include children their age, they can realize they could make a difference too!

Having access to Scholastic News would benefit our unit on nonfiction as we search for main idea & details. They could also be used as a source when we begin researching specific topics.
