Help me give my students the supplies (pool noodles, spoons, yarn, straws) needed to complete 3 weeks of STEAM challenges in our 5th grade science lab to wrap up our year while incorporating engineering, science and math!

My Project

My science lab has been a place for hands-on exploration and learning all year long! Now that we have completed testing, my students are eager to complete a set of STEAM sports challenges.

These raw materials will become mini archery bows, basketball hoops and launchers, sailboats, splashy "divers," and parachutes.

My students will design a bow that will launch a q-tip arrow as far as possible. A basketball hoop and launcher that successfully catapults a ping pong ball into the goal will be created. They will design a sailboat that can travel across water while transporting an action figure. A diving event will have them experimenting with which "diver" creates the biggest splash and displaces the most water. A parachute will be designed that allows a small plastic figure to take the most time to reach the ground. Each activity will require planning, an engineering mindset, building, testing and improving designs to successfully complete each challenge.

All of this will reinforce the skills they need to continue on in science and STEM. My students are eager to learn in my lab, make great connections when we do hands-on labs and activities, and are excited to end their 5th grade year with 12 days of STEAM challenges!
