My Students
My students are young men and young ladies who live in the "most dangerous" city in the US as well as being labeled one of the "highest poverty rates." They struggle daily in many ways to make it to school, but once they arrive they are ready to go. We have breakfast together and then we are off on our learning adventure for the day. My students come to school to learn. They have plans for college, and to reach those goals we push every day to overcome the struggles they face.
My Project
Techie 5th Graders! will help supply laptops to my students. My students use a program in reading and math which helps reinforce the lessons we are working on daily but also differentiate to meet the individual needs of my students. The students are on different lessons and therefore it is hard for the students to get their time on their lessons when sharing laptops in a class of twenty four students. The students are on the computers each morning and each afternoon during their reading and math work stations. The students also work on STEM projects. They research a topic and then have the ability to create a project. We are now working on Native American projects where the students selected a region of interest and researched a tribe in the area. The students typed a description of their project and then created a three-dimensional village, artwork, or homes.
My Fifth Grade Techies work on creating projects of all sorts and in all subjects in our classroom, so laptops will allow them to work on their differentiated learning and creating unique projects too.
When I went to school, we made posters and diorama, and now in our class, we make online posters, PowerPoint presentations, and endless word projects to just begin. It is amazing what my students create with just a few simple directions. Now with laptops, my fifth graders will be ready to soar into learning in all subjects.
