My Students

My scholars are a diverse group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawaii. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources and experiences usually available students their age living in the United States.

As their teacher, I hope to provide opportunities for learning for them through project-based learning where they will be able to nurture their basic reading/math skills, encourage critical thinking and collaboration with others and empower them with the skills necessary to be successful 21st-century learners.

These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.

My Project

When studying ecosystems in science, I hope to have this project as an extension of the curriculum. The students will work in pairs and dissect their own owl pellet. The students will see first-hand members of a food chain and experience their first dissection project using Owl pellets, curriculum flip chart, dissecting forceps and mats.

As their teacher, I hope to be able to give them memorable experiences in the classroom that will fuel their passion for learning even more.

Please help me make this project possible. Where there is a will there is a way and I don't want something like funding to get in the way of giving these bright students this opportunity for learning. Please help make this happen!
