Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I am moving school districts in Phoenix to a higher need school. 100% of my students are on the free lunch program and many of my families cannot afford a lot of school supplies. I want to help them out and teach them real world skills. I haven't met my students yet but am excited for the year ahead of us! I look forward to learning about their interests and what they can teach me.
Being in 5th grade, I know they will have a lot of energy and personality and I can't wait to meet them!
This year I am hoping to help my class of all English Language Learners with their organization skills.
My Project
Have you ever stressed out because you couldn't find that one paper you KNEW you put in your backpack? I know I have! This year we will be working on organization. Organized areas and materials help students stay on task, know where items are and help them feel more in control. Many students are not explicitly taught the important skill of organizing their materials or space.
Being able to look at an area, think logically about how to best organize it and then do it is a skill students can use in all aspects of life.
This is the time in their development when it is easiest to learn this skill and is one more step towards independent thinkers.
What We Need:
Binders- Each of my students will receive two binders (1 ELA, 1 Math) to help them organize their materials and keep handout useable.
Page Dividers- Each binder will need 5 page dividers so we can label the different sections and know where the materials are.
Pencil Pouches- One of the most common things I hear in class is "I don't know where my pencil is/ I don't have one." With these pencil pouches, students will have a designated space for their pencils and other writing utensils.
I will model and help guide the students in using our binders and do weekly binder checks to ensure we are on the right track to success!
With these donations my students will learn a real world skill and it will help them succeed in school and life.
