5th Grade: Elephant Toothpaste, Chemical and Physical Changes

Help me give my students ingredients for elephant toothpaste! Elephant toothpaste will be the perfect way to end the unit by demonstrating physical and chemical changes with a hands-on fun demonstration.

My Project

I teach science to over 400 wonderful students in a Title I elementary school in Oakland California. My students love science in part, because I motivate them to love it. Students are motivated when they are having fun, and what is more fun than making elephant toothpaste for themselves!

Elephant toothpaste will be a hands-on demonstration cumulating the past 12 weeks of hard work to see chemical and physical reactions happen in real life.

As you add the first few ingredients to make elephant toothpaste, not much happens, just physical reactions that can be undone. That is until you add the catalyst, the warm yeast, and a chemical reaction occurs, sending soapy water straight into the air!
