5th Grade Behavior Incentive Program

Help me give my students snacks, slime and other tangible incentives to show academic and behavior growth.

My Project

My co-teach classroom has a high number of individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for special education students with learning and behavioral challenges. I also serve a high population of low income students.

I struggle to get students engaged in class discussions, activities, as well a seeing the benefits of learning and as a result, I have developed a program where students earn punches on a card when they follow a posted list of behaviors as well as complete assignments with quality work; when they earn enough punches, they get a reward!

Each table of four to five students works as a team to get ten punches. Once the punches are earned, the students at that table get to "scratch off" a card with a choice of a snack or a prize that they receive immediately. In addition, the table gets to do a "roll off" with dice to see who will pick the table incentive "scratch off" card. Once all six tables have reached their ten punch goal, the tables compete in a "roll off" to see what "whole class" activity will be picked and scheduled for the next week. I have tried to make the activities exciting and engaging. This has made a huge difference in the dynamics of the classroom and we are seeing a great improvement in behaviors, test scores., with fewer distractions and conflicts. Other teachers have witnessed the change in the interactions between students with disabilities and students with learning challenges. The "team" approach we use has created a community atmosphere as well as a component of individual and team accountability and peer support. This program has also decreased the need for classroom referrals.

My students typically feel like they are "less than" and not successful, but now they are experiencing "wins" and "successes" that they wouldn't be experiencing without this program. I am asking for a variety of snack and tangible items for rewards.
