My Students

My student's make the best out of what they have even though they have so much going against them. At the end of the school year I hope to get them into or closer to their goal of being in the general education classroom.

My class is a 4th and 5th grade special education resource class in a highly populated military school.

Due to the growing numbers, last year they split the upper grades into two special education classes and the 4th/5th special education class was put in a room that was previously a kindergarten class. Last year, the 4th graders who are now 5th graders went a whole semester without having a teacher (they had many substitute teachers). Then, about mid year I was hired. Once I came, we were able to get some resources that were appropriate for their grade; but not a lot. However, regardless of the lack of resources these kids had, they all worked very hard all last year and the beginning of this year to close the gap between where they were and the grade level that they should be at. At the beginning of the day while we wait for all the students to arrive, the students are given time to read a book of their choice. However, three-fourths of the books are kindergarten books. Recently, we also have started Daily 5 reading centers, however, due to our lack of reading resources, it is more of a Daily 3.

My Project

With the requested leveled nonfiction and fiction Book Sets and Book Bins and Vocabulary Listening Center skill packs, we hope to give the students an opportunity to read something higher than kindergarten leveled books. The iPad will be used for small group and independent reading activities. For math resources I am requesting How Did You Solve It? Common Core Activity Cards, Quick-Pick Fractions Activity Cards, Base 10 Stamps, and Quick Pick Multiplication & Division Activity Cards. Our school has recently adapted the SBAC test to measure student growth. This test is much more rigorous than the previous and aligns with common core standards (CCSS). The test not only tests if the students are able to do math computations, but also requires them to explain and reason math problems. The math resources on this wish list will provide them with activities and opportunities to practice these types of questions.

The donations made here on DonorsChoose.org will provide the students with more opportunities for growth in reading and math.

With the newly adopted CCSS and SBAC testing at our school, the students are being pushed to a higher learning expectation and having these resources will be very helpful for my students.
