This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you went to 4th grade in California you probably remember a lot about the Mission unit in Social Studies! I know I do, and I want the 4th graders at my school to have those memories too!

I spend my day with 32 wonderful 4th grade students!

I love each and every one of them for their special qualities, but the greatest thing about this group of students is that they love each other! Even though our class is very diverse, they have bonded together like family. At recess there are close 500 kids on the yard, and my students are engaged in a game/sport together, as if there is no one else in the world. Our school is TItle One and the majority of our students are English Language Learners and on free or reduced lunch. Our funding is so limited due to budgets cuts, making this trip impossible without donations. My 4th grade teaching team is like a second family to me. I want funding for this field trip not only for my special 32 kiddos, but their students as well.

My Project

Being born and raised in California myself, I have such fond memories of my 4th grade year. One of those memories was my train trip to the San Juan Capistrano Mission. Taking a train at 9-10 years old is a total adventure, that I have not forgotten and I know my students will remember forever as well. We have been studying the California Missions in great detail over the past couple of months and the students are now creating written reports about the Mission they are assigned to. They are learning how to research, differentiate between fact and opinion, put information into their own words, etc. They are beginning to feel very connected to their particular Mission, I even heard them explaining interesting facts to each other in line. This field trip would be the icing on the cake for them. To see a beautiful Mission in person (and ride the train) would be amazing and wonderful for them (and me)!
