I teach at Sallie B. Howard School of the Arts and Education. I have traveled the world and recognize keenly the value of a picture in communication. We would like to develop our student's visual literacy as a means by which to relate to things and places in a concrete as well as creative manner. I would like to get digital cameras for my 4th grade team. We would like to have our students understand the value of a picture in communication. We will be key paling with students in other parts of the world, certainly in Liberia, where I lived for a number of years and still have family. We hope to exchange pictures with other students to support learning about culture, and student life. We would like our students to use the cameras to document their work, create visual timelines, and create memory games for vocabulary, math, science and social studies. I hope my students will begin to see the artistry in photography as we include photography in our units of study. I think visual literacy is as important as verbal and text literacy, for some students it is more effective. I believe my students will start to come up with many ways in which we can use photos to add depth to our curriculum.
