Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The data from the 4th grade Science test for 2004 indicates that 25.9% of PS 8's 4th grade students perform below the standards on the State Science test in comparison with a New York city average of 10.9%. The students of our school lack valuable science experiences both in the classroom and at home. It is my goal as a fourth grade teacher to provide the students in my class as many valuable experiences in guided science inquiry as time allots. However, the school lacks funding for Science. We need hands-on learning kits from Foss that will provide activities that allow students to discover with their own hands and then have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences on paper. My class has a total of 24 students and we are part of a dual-language program where students are becoming proficient in both English and Spanish. The FOSS program offers materials in both languages. According to the new SCOPE and SEQUENCE for NYC schools, the students are supposed to study forest life and ecosystems and interdependence, water, electricity and magnetism, forces and motion, earth processes and landforms and the human body. Therefore, we need kits that address these units. The students will benefit from these kits because they will have a fighting chance to perform higher on their Science test in April after having valuable experiences that help them pass the practical portion of the test and pass the written portion with their general knowledge of science. The main kit that we would like to start with is the measurement module from Delta Education. This will help the students during the practical portion of the state test when they perform a task with measurement and answer various questions about volume, mass, diameter, and so forth. This module will help prepare them using guided science inquiry.
