This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
These are unprecedented times. Never did I imagine that when my students and I said goodbye last March it would mean that it was our last day in the classroom for months. After embarking on our distance learning journey, we understand now more than ever, the essential need for community. Ours is one of respect, understanding, empathy, and integrity. In the coming weeks, I am greatly looking forward to welcoming students back into my classroom, without forgetting the valuable lessons learned throughout distance learning.
Serving a large underrepresented group of youths, I am proud to be a member of this school, as its teachers work unbelievably hard to give each child the most opportunities for success.
My 26 students come from diverse social and economic backgrounds, with roughly 30% of the school's population identifying as African American and 50% Hispanic. 75% of our students qualify for free lunch. We have a wide range of student needs and opportunities to support growth. Our academic goals range from kinder to 5th grade, and our classroom is always swarming with ideas. Fostering education for the whole child, my class is a family that caters to the needs of each.
My Project
The first few weeks of school have been a whirlwind, but filled with lots of hope and excitement for the future. As I have gotten to know my students better, I can see a real passion for mathematics and art blossoming. Foundational mathematical skills, such as multiplication understanding and facts, are crucial to the continued critical thinking in fourth grade math. As we continue to implement Cognitively Guided Instruction and Math Talks throughout our learning, I want to give my students resources they can use to continue their learning at home. The math resources requested in this project will allow me to give each of my students that extra practice!
With busy schedules and a seemingly endless list of standards to address, unfortunately, art is too often deemed a non-necessity and is the first to hit the chopping block.
I want to make it a point this year to encourage students to use art as a method of expressing themselves- their identities, their strengths, their vulnerabilities, and their emotions during this unprecedented time. All of us have just lived through a time strife with challenges, isolation, and fear. My students (and everyone) need a safe space and manner to process this and art is a medium that can allow students to do just that. If the overarching goal of my classroom is to create active civic-minded leaders, as humans who practice empathy, understanding, and compassion, I need to ensure my classroom practices the skills and strategies necessary to develop these characteristics. This project can help my students practice foundational multiplication practice and multiple art projects, continuing to foster their love of learning in our classroom.
