My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things fun and simple. I want to provide my students with creative and meaningful musical learning experiences.
My students are creative, talented and very eager to learn.
They like to play instruments, they love to sing and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of musical excellence.
My Project
In Kindergarten, we begin to use explore using our voices in very different ways. It is helpful for the students to be able to categorize their different voices into different sounds. We go over the four ways to use our voice: whisper, talk, sing, and shout!
We are a performing arts school and the use of these puppets will allow our students to understand this concept in a very creative and performance oriented way!
Peter the Rabbit will tell us all about our talking voice--it's his favorite!. Snowy the Owl will help us learn about our singing voice--she loves to sing and help others learn how to sing. Flitter the Butterfly will help us learn about our whisper voice--she's very shy and you have to get really close to hear her. Then finally, the Grizzly Bear will help us to learn about our shouting voice--sometimes he forgets where he is and uses his shouting voice inside!
I believe that using creative teaching materials and methods helps our students to learn various concepts and ideas in a much better way. I know that my children will love to learn with the use of these puppets.
The expo markers will help us be able to write music on our white boards. The book will help us be able to talk about loud and soft sounds through the experience of rain!
