Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a second-year third grade teacher in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. I teach thirty 8-10-year-olds of a wide range of abilities. Some can barely read, while others are working at a fourth grade level. This year, for the first time, third graders in New York City will be required to take a state reading/writing test. Until this year, their tests were reading only... so we need a LOT of work on our writing! My students are often disillusioned about writing-- they think it\'s too hard, it\'s boring or they can\'t do it. I am requesting three different student writing books for each of my students. The first book is a \"spelling journal\" that students will keep in their writing folders. When they need help spelling a word, they will go to their journals and look it up, or they will bring their journals to me and I will write the word once for them. Spelling is very important on their upcoming test, and this book will also help them in other academic disciplines. Second, I am requesting Word Power! books for each of my students. Word Power! books act as a beginner\'s thesaurus for children, listing several synonyms for commonly used words. These books will help them to expand their vocabulary as well as choose more interesting words to use in their writing. Finally, as a \"reward\" of sorts, I am asking for a set of cursive writing books. I used these books with my students last year and they were a HUGE hit! Penmanship is often neglected, but it is very important and will also give them an edge on their writing tests if they have neat handwriting. Please help my students to develop a love of writing by funding this proposal and putting these wonderful materials into the hands of my 3rd graders. Thank you!
