3rd Graders Have Social-Emotional Needs!

Help me give my students the supplies that make a 3rd grade class an emotionally safe place, such as magnets for student work, note cards to promote empathy, and compliment journals that document acts of kindness.

My Project

The pandemic is still impacting schools and students; our school's decreased enrollments have removed three full-time teacher positions. That means three fewer classes and a need to shuffle teachers to match grade level enrollments. I am moving to 3rd Grade! Third graders need different chairs, charts, lots of emotional support, and lessons in empathy. Addressing mental health and social-emotional needs is a noteworthy trend in literature. (Think A Boy Called Bat, Wonder, The Wish Tree just to name a few.) Librarians have long emphasized that children will select books at eye-level, and also books set out showing the cover (not just the spine). Repurposing clear napkin dispensers as two-sided book displays will allow me to promote targeted books that develop empathy. Furthermore, posting student work using magnets, having bulletin board (with soothing patterned duct tape trim) reminding us of emotional strategies, engaging in kindness with a compliment journal, and having student names prominently displayed in the room (vinyl stickers) creates feelings of welcome and security.

The incoming third graders have had less practice in a regular classroom and have more social-emotional needs than students in past years.

Academics take a back seat when students don't feel emotionally safe. Giving these students a warm, loving, academic environment will be crucial, and this project uses a myriad of ways to help students look for good in others and themselves. As they feel valued and show kindness to others, we will be free to work on phonics, fluency, and multiplication.
