This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from diverse backgrounds. We have over 5 cultures represented in our class and three different home language spoken. My students come from working class families where most parents work full time out of necessity.
Even though my class is filled with students with a range of reading levels, they all have one thing in common.
They love reading. They love to read stories and listen to stories. They're always asking when we're going to go to the library or asking when I am going to finish the read-aloud.
My Project
Most of my students' lives are spent in their urban community. Many students do not venture very far. Even though we live in an urban habitat, students need to learn about other habitats and ecosystems. We will begin each unit of study with hands-on observations and finish by comparing our findings with in-depth reading of our textbooks.
Throughout the school year our class will learn about and recreate ecosystems in the classroom using the funded materials.
We need science books, living creatures such as fish, crickets, and algae, and other hands-on science materials. If we can't take a visit to the aquarium, why not recreate a marine ecosystem in the classroom using an aquarium kit? We are not near the grasslands, but we will grow and study the flowers that grow there.
