Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Special Education reading Intervention teacher working with groups of struggling or non-readers. I teach at a school where over 90% of the students qualify for free lunch/reduced-price lunch. My students are growing up in a school district that is identified as the poorest congressional district in our city where most of the families are living below poverty line.
My students are identified as struggling readers and often lose focus during learning for reasons beyond their control.
I also support a group of dedicated and enthusiastic PreK3s (yes 3 year olds!) and with them and my upper grades I'm helping them develop socially and emotionally. My students are very hard working and even though most of them live in a community facing extreme poverty they come to class dedicated to work.
School is their refuge and a place to find their voice. Many of my students have disabilities, specifically: learning disabilities, speech & language disabilities, ADHD and autism. I want classroom resources that allow them access to their learning and to teach them strategies to manage their disabilities and gain independence over their own learning and find a voice!
My Project
Very often students are not consistently given an opportunity at a hands-on approach to learning daily.
Research shows that children benefit and thrive with a multi-sensory approach to learning, and what better way to get all of the body's system in sync than a hands-on activity such as 3Doodling?
I encourage my students to extend their minds and ideas and to express their creativity. I want to have a 3Doodling station in the room where students have to opportunity to increase language, follow procedure, makes academic connections through the arts, all while building upon their science and math intellect. This station that could become a staple in our room would truly be a place where inquiring minds can soar!
