Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Where I teach, we have a lot of students hungry to learn. These students put in long hours before and after school and we even go to competitions on Saturdays. Sometimes they wake up before six a.m. just to go! Our student population is very diverse but primarily Hispanic. A number of our students are English language learners from Mexico.
Even though diversity is great among the student population, the common thread among them is to learn things that have an impact on their lives.
When education is presented to them in a "real" way, they are excited about it.
It is very fulfilling as their teacher to see them work hard and put a lot of elbow grease into learning. At the end of the day, I just want to see these students develop a passion for learning. These students are ready to rise above the teacher shortages and school funding hurdles to achieve something great!
My Project
The computer science team at my high school did a lot of projects this last semester that involved 3D printers. My students built prosthetic arms for parents, ocarinas for impoverished kids in Guatemala, and ornaments and various projects we shared with our local community.
These students have STEM fever.
They want to do bigger and better projects and reach out more to our community. We would like to fund-raise for a large 3D printer so that bigger projects are feasible.
We could print more prosthetic pieces, and build items to help in our classroom. We could also print useful robotics parts for our robotics classes, and print models to create lifelike simulations for the robotics class as well.
My students love helping others and they love using their science and mathematics talents to do so.
Thanks for considering our project. Please consider helping my students achieve their goals and dreams.
