This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Within the NYC Public school system is District 75. District 75 houses the highest needs special needs students and oftentimes, these students also fall into the highest needs economically disadvantaged category. Over 90% of my students fall into this category. We are a 12-month program, where students attend year-round to receive services.

My students are part of the largest school district in the country (the NYC DOE) and fall into the highest needs category.

For years, I have poured my own money into my classroom, but it is not enough! I have reached out to local community members and collected used and refurbished computers, but they do not meet the requirements to run modern software.

I teach grades K-8 and a total of 9 classes, a daily lunch club and a weekly positive behavior intervention club as a reward for students. All students would have access to these resources! That is why today, I am reaching out for global support to help our highest needs students get an equal chance to succeed! We truly need your assistance to level the playing field. Many students come from homes that do not have Internet access or technology, further increasing the achievement gap.

My Project

My students and I have been learning about 3D printing and more specifically, about 3D printing prosthetic hands for children born without hands. To date, we have presented aboard The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in June 2018, at the District 75 STEM Fair and I shared my knowledge at a city-wide conference, the #NYCSchoolsTech Summit, with fellow educators in July 2018 to turn-key what I have learned about 3D printing prosthetic hands!

At this point, my students and I have run into technical difficulties because of using low-end technology powering our 3D printers - This is why I would like to upgrade the memory of our main laptop and add monitors to make it more accessible for students to visualize the work we are doing in real-time.

Imagine designing a hand on one monitor, while simultaneously watching a video tutorial or seeing images of the hand we are working on. With multiple monitors, this will be possible! Utilizing the USB to HDMI cable, we can take a lower-end laptop and add an extra monitor to make this work!

I also researched the least-expensive color laserjet printer so we can print out design ideas in color. I made sure to find a printer that uses generic toner to keep it affordable for future use. Sadly, the norm in public schools is for everything to be printed in black and white because of financial constraints.

These additions are essential because they will help make my lessons more accessible for my students who suffer from multiple, severe disabilities.

With your help, we can continue our mission of learning about 3D printed prosthetic hands and continue to build hands for students in need, without running into technical problems. Thank you so much for your generous donations and support. We truly appreciate it!
