Although our school is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, about 50% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged, about 25% are English language learners, and about 50% qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. Less than 50% of the parents have had some college or graduated from college.
My students are full of energy, creativity, passion, perseverance, and diversity.
Working with middle school students keeps me up with the latest clothing, music, and video game trends. I am forced to be a lifelong learner when trying to incorporate their interests into my classroom.
My Project
Digital natives like today’s students are excited about new technology like computer aided design and 3d printing. Yet, the process of creating a design on the computer to seeing the actual product is not always a seamless endeavor. Frustrations from 3d printing can result from slow speed, poor quality, and failed prints.
In order to produce a quality project, students need to be equipped with the proper tools to perform preventative maintenance, polish their finished handiwork, and remove extraneous print pieces.
A well functioning machine can help students make things they can be proud of. They can see the benefit of quick prototyping and can concretely imagine solutions to problems in the real world.
