3D Printing Brings Kids' Dreams To Life

Help me give my students a well-stocked 3D printing set-up in our STEAM Lab. I work at a Title I school and run a STEAM Lunch Club for grades 1-5.

My Project

I work at a Title I school, where 48% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged. I run a STEAM Lunch Club for grades 1-5, and try to introduce the students to opportunities they may not have outside of school. We design and build things out of LEGO bricks, cardboard, craft sticks, recycled materials and more. We learn basic coding concepts using Scratch Jr, Scratch, and Osmo.

This year we began learning how to create 3D models using TinkerCad, and the kids LOVED it!

I kept the TinkerCad classrooms open after the three weeks STEAM Lunch Club focused on it at school, and the kids have continued designing at home or when they have choice time in the classroom. I have told all the STEAM Club students that I will print whatever they design (after we sit down and review the design for adjustments that need to be made, of course).

The kids are building their creativity and critical thinking skills with every model they create. They are getting better at anticipating print problems, and figuring out the adjustments that need to be made before the first test print. Some of them have even started prototyping projects with 3D printing, with the hope that they will build a larger version of the project out of wood (I've learned a lot about constructing a floating table from one student this year).

I would love to continue to let my students 3D print the ideas in their heads, no matter how crazy. I am also hoping to spread the 3D printing bug to more teachers in the school, so the kids can add 3D models to their science and history lessons. Having more filament and replacing my well-used build plates would help me to do that.
