My Students

Imagine walking into a classroom, with limited experiences in a formal education setting. You have never read or wrote anything, and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day. I work in a large school with a very high immigrant population on the island of Oahu.

Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting.

We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. They love to read and have a high interest in the latest technology trends. This year we have incorporated coding into our curriculum. We have ordered books that will help them to take their coding skills to new levels. Most of them do not have access to computers at home, but we are able to provide it for them in our classrooms. Teachers may not be able to control their home lives, but we can certainly control their experiences in our classrooms. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I hope to inspire even my earliest learners to strive for a path of academic excellence.

My Project

3D printing technology positions students as creators. Instead of buying or consuming the creations of someone else they become inventors who can identify needs and create solutions.

Although art is already making a bit of a comeback with the advent of STEAM education, 3D printing will help catapult it to the top.

With 3D printing, students become designers and creators using cutting-edge technology to visualize and create their own imaginations.

3D printing is still a very new technology that is not readily available to your average consumer. It has a ‘wow factor’ that can engage students who would otherwise have nothing to do with their learning.

Using 3D printing in the classroom will allow my students to become a part of the growing online community dedicated to 3D printing. Students have the ability to like and comment on their peers’ designs. Inspiring insightful discussion about online activities and how to be a responsible digital citizen.
