3D Printer to Encourage Engineering

My students need a 3-D printer to investigate areas of engineering and encourage more students to go into engineering fields.

My Students

At my school every child takes technology education. Showing them 3-D printing would expose so many students to some areas of engineering and manufacturing. Students need this exposure in middle school to hopefully encourage more interest in these areas leading to more careers in the future.

My students are sixth, seventh and eighth grade middle school students.

They love to investigate ideas with hands on projects, and are always curious to learn and try new things. In FIRST LEGO league club we solve missions by programming robots to complete tasks and think outside the box to come up with different innovations/inventions to solve a give problem. My school always encourages technology of all types. This year I was lucky enough to get desktops for my classroom and attend training for Project Lead the Way curriculum.

My Project

This year is the first year I have computers in my classroom. Students would use the 3-D printer to bring their CAD designs to life. Students would design certain parts, probably for the projects they are making in class (co2 car wheels, propellers for boats etc.), and then actually print that part on the 3-D printer. How exciting to see each student's design come to life!

This project will make a difference because we are living the age of hands-on learning and a 3-D printer helps make that a reality in my classroom.

Students are able to see their creation through all the steps of the design process and have a tangible end product!
