My Students

I teach AP Calculus and Math 3 to about 90 students a semester in my school's STEM magnet program. Having the opportunity to teach students in our STEM magnet program means I encounter curious minds on a daily basis. My students love to figure out the "why" behind the math they are learning- a teacher's dream!

If I can give my students the tools to better lead them in the direction of answering the question "why," then I feel I will have better prepared them for the innovative world in which we live.

My Project

As a teacher, I frequently hear the phrase "when am I ever going to use this?" With the help of 3D printers, I hope to give students an answer to that question. We study various types of functions, but don't necessarily put them in context.

If my students had the ability to build 3D models and apply the functions they are studying, their understanding of the math will grow, along with the belief that what they are learning does, in fact, have a purpose.

Most of my students are visual and tactile learners. Giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of functions through building 3D models will help students demonstrate their mastery of the mathematical concepts, as well as equip them with 21st century skills for many mathematical and engineering fields.
