If you were to stand in the doorway of my classroom, you would see the following things: collaboration, creativity, and hands-on learning. My students are eager to learn and ask questions about how things work. I challenge them to explain what is happening in the world around them.
Teamwork, engineering, and creativity come alive in my classroom as students work to solve design challenges.
The room is buzzing with activity as problems are being solved and the students work together to find solutions to the task at hand.
My students are 7th graders who are eager to learn and are fascinated by science. They ask questions about the world around them and want to know how the world works. I have students from a wide range of economic backgrounds with a growing population of lower income students. My school has outdated science equipment that I am slowly trying to replace with a limited budget for my science department.
My Project
My students need a 3D printer and filament.
"If only we had a 3D printer, we could...." was a comment made to me by one of my students recently. My students see the potential in what they create, and unfortunately, the resources we have are limited. My students would be able to follow the engineering design process to solve problems and design solutions to those problems. 3D printing would allow them to take the task a step further and actually create their design. The impact of seeing their creation become a reality would help engage my students and keep them interested in learning about science and engineering. The goal would be to allow each student to print at least one design by the end of the school year.
Science is something you do, not something that is done to you.
I believe that the way to learn science is by doing and finding ways to teach science in a way that peaks curiosity in my students. The students I work with will be excited to have a 3D printer available for them to use. They will learn how to design solutions and collaborate with other students. Donations will help provide more resources for my science classroom that I have not been able to fund through my limited classroom budget.
