My students need a commercial mixer with attachments to keep their budding baking business going to learn how to bake efficiently while learning job skills!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Having an area within your school that you can call your own is important for a student. Tasked with building a baking program from the ground up, my students and I have taken 371Cakes to new levels. The only way to keep it moving upward is by improving our mixer!
My students are 12 students who have been classified as having an emotional disturbance combined with learning disabilities.
They have difficulty in attending school and are being drawn to the streets, so my school created vocational programs to pique their interest and keep them off the streets. As part of our everyday instruction, my students participate in a baking program we have named 371Cakes. We pride ourselves on teaching our students work ethics, baking skills and, more importantly, proving them that there is a way off the streets. My students have very little to look forward to on a daily basis but I know that this program is something that they truly look forward to. Not many people would believe you if you told that them that my students create complex recipes varying from cinnamon rolls to assorted flavors of cupcakes but with dedication and hard work we do. Please help them and show them their work is being noticed!
In order to show my students that we as a community support their hard work and dedication, 371Cakes needs the a new mixer with attachments desperately. Often times, I hear "Mr. H., why are we going to do this if we don't have the supplies?" or "Mr. H., now what are we going to do now that another mixer has broken?" After hearing this often, I told them I will make sure they have all the materials they need to change their lives. The materials needed to better my students' futures are a Kitchenaid 7-QT NSF Commercial Mixer and 1 7-QT NSF Commercial Mixer Flex-Edge Scraper Beater. Please be the first, the next and more importantly the last person to show my students that their hard work is being noticed and will benefit them in the future.
Why is this project so important?
This mixer is integral to our baking program! I was told that I can do this program, but it has to show results both academically and by improving attendance. Every single year when I look at the data it shows tenfold how important it is. Roughly 75% of the students who participate in this baking program increase their attendance as well as their credit accumulation. We need this mixer to keep our momentum rolling as well as to keep our baking program thriving!
