3 Dimensional Surface Area and Volume Recycled Robot Challenge

What are the goals for the project?

- Develop a deeper understanding of geometric concepts such as surface area and volume by applying them to a hands-on project.

- Enhance problem-solving skills by calculating the surface area and volume of complex 3D objects.

- Foster creativity and spatial reasoning through the construction of a unique robot using recycled materials.

- Promote environmental awareness and sustainability by repurposing discarded objects.

- Encourage teamwork, communication, and collaboration among students.

How Specific Items Help with Learning:

- 3D Objects: By using everyday objects with various shapes and sizes, students will encounter real-world applications of surface area and volume calculations. This hands-on approach will reinforce their understanding of these geometric concepts.

- Tape: Connecting the recycled objects will require careful planning and spatial awareness, enhancing students' spatial reasoning abilities.

- Tin Foil: Covering the robot with tin foil will provide an opportunity to estimate and calculate the surface area required, further solidifying their understanding of this concept.

- Measuring Tools: Will help students measure their 3d shapes. They will be able to calculate the surface area and volume of real figures.

- Dry erase supplies and paper: Students will use these supplies to show their work. They will be able to collaborate and communicate with their peers.

What is Special About My Students?

As 9th and 10th graders, these students are at a pivotal stage of their cognitive development, transitioning from concrete to abstract thinking. This project caters to their need for tangible, hands-on experiences while challenging them to apply abstract geometric concepts.

By engaging in this project, students will not only deepen their understanding of geometry but also cultivate valuable life skills such as creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.
