Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has dozens of languages running through the halls, languages ranging across several continents. We have students that are recent immigrants, refugees, as well as established families of the community, all wrapped into a single school. We are a school that is urban-centered, but internationally focused, highlighting all aspects of culture; a school of students eager to join the ranks of society in different careers as well as obtaining higher education degrees. The students that I have met are not just looking for individual success, but are required to graduate thinking about their communities and becoming actionable thinkers with clear goals in mind.

Innovation is ubiquitous, risk-taking a must for both teachers and students; and various means of achieving excellence is our mission.

Having taught in a variety of institutions, I've never felt more welcome to be creative in my classroom, and I pass this message on to our students; who, while struggling, are up to meeting this challenge. Our students are looking to find their confidence, and ready to take on the world with that confidence. They are handfuls of diamonds in the rough, looking to explore the world and contribute to their community.

My Project

As my classroom moves further into a project-based learning environment, embracing more of the application from critical theory, I'd like to offer the students the opportunity to experiment with 3-D printing. Where some schools have multiple 3-D printers, I'm the only classroom with a color printer and I'd like to change that trend. Learning can't just be students that are empty vessels to be filled; they need to be active in their education. With a 3-D printer, I can connect the mind with some more hands-on learning that really engages the creativity. I already am writing two specific projects, and my revised curriculum will involve using the 3-D printer.
