3-D into 3-R's: RECYCLING, RE-PURPOSING, REUSING

Help me give my students supplies for hands-on, career-oriented, and environmentally-aware experiences. The filament will be used in 3D printers. Students use the printers to invent, create, build, and reflect on their personal projects.

My Students

Our 8th grade averages 150 students each year. We are a small school in the Eastern Panhandle of rural WV with a poverty level of 70%. We are located approximately 2 1/2 hours from Washington DC. Unfortunately, that has caused major financial problems for our area. The cost of living is almost twice that of other areas in WV. Poverty has placed a major influence on our community and schools. Within the past 4 years our school system has witnessed major cuts from the federal, state, and local governments. Our school access levy was cut to 70% of the projected need for the community.

STEM Skills are a major need for our School.

We are in need of more resources and materials to to do such activities.

My Project

STEM Skills are a major need for our school. We are in need of more resources and materials to do such activities. Without a Tech Educ class, our students are not receiving all of the opportunities possible for them to experience hands-on/STEM related projects. A large portion of our population lives in poverty and/or come from blue collar homes. Our students need to be aware that today’s blue collar jobs are also technologically advanced and require use of 3-D printers and/or other forms of technology.

Sadly, the West Virginia Department of Education regulations do not quality my class for Career and Technical Education funding.

I am allotted the same amount of funds as any other classroom teacher in our building. Any expensive items, like the Protocycle, need to be purchased through funds that I receive from donation or grants.
