My Project
Our school provides public school students in Baltimore with an opportunity to attend college early, within the supportive environment of a High School. Upon entering the 11th grade, students begin taking college courses, culminating in an A.A. degree awarded from Bard College. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds: many fall below the poverty line; 85% are black and 5% Hispanic; many identify as LGBTQ or gender non-normative.
The goal of this project is to expand access in an urban school environment to college-level science topics.
To accomplish this, I've created a physics laboratory course that accesses the same curriculum as 4-year institutions for introductory physics. Our students will perform inquiry experiments across the mechanics topics which will include having students formulate the key principles of projectile motion including the relationship between horizontal and vertical motion of a projectile with the requested launchers.
Our students are still high school age and I want to incorporate the fun aspects of learning with these inquiry activities.
