Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Last month, the space shuttle Endeavour flew overhead on a tour through LA while my 2nd graders watched in awe. The shuttle will be exhibited in the nearby the CA Science Center. Although it's so close to our inner-city school, we don't have the funding to pay for a field trip to see in person.
I teach a fantastic group of energetic 2nd graders at an inner-city school.
More than 70% of my students come from economically challenged families. For the majority of my students, their financial difficulties don't allow them to have the same access to educational field trips as the average students do. This means that funded field trips to see amazing sights in Los Angeles area (their own backyard!) are essential learning tools that can bridge the gap between more privileged communities and MY students.
My Project
Visiting the CA Science Center will allow my 2nd graders to have the amazing opportunity to witness a part of science history. There aren't many opportunities to see a space shuttle in person. There are only a few NASA shuttles people can see in person. Why not grant them the opportunity to see the ONLY space shuttle in the west coast.
People remember those unique moments in history which make long lasting impressions.
While today's rocket scientists may have been inspired by Kennedy's speech or Neil Armstrong's footsteps on the moon, our future scientists and engineers can also be inspired by witnessing the shuttle in person. My inner-city students deserve that same chance!
