I have been given the wonderful opportunity to turn 6th grade students into filmmakers! I am an art teacher in the Chicago Public Schools who is currently integrating technology into my curriculum to introduce students to a variety of computer skills and computer-based careers. My classroom has been turned into a movie studio where children are creating scripts, storyboarding, filming, and then editing their original animated movies. Our experience will be greatly enhanced through the purchase of technology equipment for the students to use for many years.
The animation technique we use is called Stop-Motion Animation (for example; "Wallace and Grommit," "Gumby," and "Nightmare Before Christmas"). This technique relies on the use of digital still cameras for all filming. Our school currently has one digital still camera. My class is divided into 6 teams who are all sharing the school's single camera to film their 6 different movies. Although the teams are being very patient and collaborative with the camera, having to share the most necessary piece of equipment 6 ways greatly hinders the practice and exposure for the students.
I am asking Donors Choose for 3 more digital still cameras for our class to use. Besides their use in Animation Class, these cameras will be available for students to use to enhance other projects. Students can document research for the science fair, make a photojournalistic record of school events such as assemblies and graduation, and create web pages.
Our school has no funds to purchase the digital cameras. We are a refugee population representing 34 different nations (mostly Bosnian and African) with a 90% low income rate. Our students and families are very hard working and dedicated to making a better life for themselves and others in the United States. Providing the students with increased learning opportunities makes them work even harder. I look forward to seeing the amazing results our students will bring forth if provided with this additional use of technology.
