In planning for the upcoming school year, I have gotten quite excited about all of the field trip options here in Brooklyn. I think of all of these amazing places that will fit so nicely into the units I am planning! This summer, I had the opportunity to go to the New York Aquarium. I immediately knew that I had to do a unit on ocean life this year, and take my 2nd graders to the aquarium. In planning for this unit and field trip, I realized how nice it would be to have the classroom activities be very "hands on" and student-centered. I want to get an aquarium, allow the students to pick what types of fish to get, and be responsible for the feeding and caring for the fish. I want us to be able to come back from our field trip and compare the big aquarium to our aquarium. I think this experience will allow the students to make connections between their school community and the community that they live in. It will also encourage responsibility and a sense of pride and ownership in their classroom. I teach in the urban setting of New York City, in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. I have second graders and need funding for this classroom aquarium that will used by all of them. I feel strongly about this unit, as it will reach out to different learning styles and needs of my students. It will transform their very urban and sometimes hectic world into a serene setting, if only for a short time.
