I haven't met this year's class yet! They'll join me on August 16th. I'll be teaching 2nd grade again at a Title One school. There will certainly be kids from many different backgrounds. There will also certainly be a large range of incomes, from middle class to lower income kids, some in public housing and potentially also students whose families are homeless.
My school is a truly a community school.
We are also known for being a welcoming and caring place where kids and families feel accepted and nurtured. Our school motto is "love, kindness and respect," and once you visit us it's easy to see why.
My Project
I am so excited to give my kids some new options for seating and working in the classroom. This year I'm adding a genius hour in my second grade classroom. I can't wait to see the kids use their new stools and clipboards. They'll be able to move around the room to work on projects of their choice that support their learning in many subject areas.
Genius hour will involve students choosing projects that interest them!
I'll be able to provide the kids with the materials they need to complete their projects. They'll be able to use their new art materials to show their knowledge of content. The kids will also get some of the rich sensory experience that sometimes low-income kids miss out on. I can't wait!
