My Students

Our school houses over twelve hundred students in kindergarten through fifth grade. We are an underfunded, Title I school, in an inner city, where many ethnicities come together to learn and explore while speaking over forty languages! The students in my second grade class are a diverse bunch! The majority of them speak English as a second language, while others receive learning support for different needs. Most of the students came to my class reading below grade level. They never experienced kindergarten and lack the resources at home to develop their abilities.

There are many children’s books out there that teach tolerance and encourage their readers to be respectful of all types of people regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality.

The materials requested will make a difference because the students will learn to recognize that no matter who you are, someone is always facing a challenge. By reading these stories, students will realize that any obstacle can be overcome with dedication and perseverance. Teaching tolerance will encourage my students to be respectful of others at home and in our community.

My Project

What a year this has been! Our children have experienced a troubling time in our country. When my students enter my class or join me in our online learning, I want them to know they are loved, appreciated, and respected, no matter the color of their skin. I want them to feel comfortable and at ease while learning about various cultures and celebrating our similarities and differences.

I want to make sure I am bringing diversity into my classroom library by providing stories that represent the entire classroom dynamic.

We will explore stories that celebrate cultural differences, but also demonstrate similarities within their family experiences. We'll explore traditions, as well as every day triumphs and sometimes tragedies that occur in daily life.

My goal is to set a positive example and to remind students that above all else, to be kind to others. I want to instill positivity of respecting others, listening to stories that remind us that we are all unique and we all want to be loved and appreciated in everything we do. I want our classroom library to represent what our world actually looks like and how we all should be kind, respectful citizens that appreciates each other.
