My students need a 3D printer and filament in order to bring their designs and ideas to life!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My group of 6th graders are enthusiastic and resilient problem solvers. They all come to school each day with a smile on their face despite the challenges they face at home. Our school serves a high poverty population and provides free breakfast and lunch for all the students. Many of them spend their weekends in Tijuana with family, but dedicate all of their time to the learning we share in our classroom.
I work hard to provide everything they need to be successful, but with the help of generous donors, my students can have access to materials that I am not able to provide on my own.
In our classroom we value a strong sense of community, collaboration, and appreciation for each other. I make sure to provide learning opportunities that will help them become well rounded citizens of the world and they work hard to be active participants in our classroom!
My Project
With technology being so advanced, students these days have opportunities to experience applications of technology I never even dreamed of when I was in school. The hot ticket item for schools these days are 3D printers. Some schools are fortunate enough to have labs with multiple printers for students to use, but coming from a school that just implemented 1:1 technology this year, that dream still seems far off in our future. For our small Title 1 school, the only hope of bringing this resource to my students is through the generosity of donors like yourself.
While attending this year's Anaheim STEM Symposium, sponsored by the CDE, I spoke with many presenters, teachers, and vendors about the benefits their students are reaping from their 3D printers.
Students are learning how to design prototypes using computer aided design software and are actually getting to see their ideas come to life. Feeling proficient and confident in CAD software, as well as the pride that comes with creating something will help open my students up to the possibility of exploring careers in STEM fields. I want to show my students that they can become scientists or engineers too.
Currently, my students draw out their engineering designs on paper and make models using recycled materials that we collect. I want to be able to bring 3D printing to my students so they can not only have an actual prototype, but in some cases, have a working prototype.
3D printers have many applications for students in the classroom across many content areas. They can print molecules or organs to study in science, artifacts for closer inspection in social studies, new inventions for engineering, and so much more. There is no limit to what the can create!
