Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With the technological advances that have been made over the years, we live in a world where technology is essential. I firmly believe that every child should have easy access to a computer. Most of my students don't have a computer at home, so I want to give them access to a computer at school.
I work in an extremely impoverished area.
My students have seen and dealt with more in their short lives than most adults will ever have to experience. My students are bright, curious and full of life. My class is an ELL (English Language Learner) class. That means that the majority of my students learned, or are learning, English as a second language. My students come from all over the world. I have students from Puerto Rico, Guyana, The Dominican Republic and various countries in West Africa. Many of my students came from their country and entered my school knowing little to no English. It's truly amazing how quickly they pick up the language. It's very rewarding to see.
My Project
I currently have 2 old Dell PCs in my classroom. One barely works and the other one is incredibly slow. When my students do go on the computer that works, my kids amaze me - they know how to operate and maneuver the computer much better than I do! If I had an iPad tablet for my class, I would be able to give all my children the opportunity to work with the tablet on a one-on-one and group basis. They can sit with the tablet at their desk to become comfortable with it, learn from it, do research with it, and use it just as they use other classroom learning materials. 2 other classes in my school have a tablet for every student in their class (the principal got them donated). My children deserve the same opportunities that other children in the school (and across the country) have.
With your support, my students will have an invaluable tool in our classroom that will be used for years to come.
They will gain vital knowledge of how to use and navigate a computer at a young age. Children are sponges, if you teach them as much as you can while they are still young, their future will be limitless. Myself, as well as my students,, would be incredibly grateful too receive this tablet.
