28 Second Graders in Desperate Need of a Classroom Rug!
My students need a brand new child-friendly rug to sit on in the classroom library. The rug I currently have is over 10 years old & filthy. My students deserve better.

My Students
10 years ago, when I first started teaching at my school, my classroom came with a filthy rug. Over the years, children have urinated and vomited on it. I'm not allowed to throw it away because the early childhood classrooms must have a large rug. My students sit in filth. It's very upsetting.
I work in an extremely impoverished area.
My students have seen and dealt with more in their short lives than most adults will ever have to experience. My class is a second grade ELL (English Language Learner) class. That means that the majority of my students learned, or are learning, English as a second language. My students come from all over the world. I have children from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Guyana and various countries in West Africa. Each year, many of my students come straight from their native country and know little to no English. But, it's truly amazing how quickly they pick up the language. They are like little sponges! It's incredibly rewarding to see them blossom.
My Project
I currently have a very large (and very dirty) rainbow colored rug in my classroom. A large rug is a key part of an early childhood classroom because the children sit on the rug when I read to them and when I teach them as a group. Some students even lay on the rug when they are reading because they are more comfortable that way - that's exactly what the rug is for! For the past 10 years, every time a child has a bathroom accident or vomits on the rug, a custodian comes and quickly cleans it. It KILLS me to see my students sitting in such unsanitary conditions. I've contemplated purchasing my own rug to replace the one I have now, but I can not afford it. My students have very little to call their own. School is their safe haven. I want to be able to give them a classroom environment that is not only bright and welcoming, but is also hygienic.
With your support, my students will have a brand new large colorful rug to sit on.
My mind will be at peace when I see them sitting on a rug that is new and clean. They are truly great kids. They deserve the same opportunities as children in wealthier areas. My goal is to give them as much as I possibly can in order to improve the time they spend in school. Myself, as well as my students, would be incredibly grateful to receive a new classroom rug.
