28 Second Grade ESL Students Need a MakerBot 3D Printer!
My students need a MakerBot 3D printer to have hands-on visuals that can be created to clarify difficult concepts and further their interest and excitement in learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With the technological advances that have been made over the years, we live in a world where technology is absolutely essential. I firmly believe that every student should be exposed to as many different types of technology as possible at an early age.
I work in an extremely impoverished area.
My students have seen and dealt with more in their short lives that most adults will ever have to experience. My students are bright, curious and full of life. My class is an ESL (English as a Second Language) class. That means that the majority of my students, learned, or are currently learning, English as a second language. My students come from all over the world. I have students from Guyana, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and various countries in West Africa. Many of my students came from their native country and entered school knowing little to no English. It's truly amazing how quickly they pick up the language. It's incredibly rewarding to see.
My Project
I currently have 3 old Dell PCs in my classroom and a broken printer. Two of the computers work, but they are incredibly slow and frustrating for my students to use. The third computer is broken. That is the only technology that I have in my classroom for my students to work with. When I learned about the MakerBot 3D printer, I was elated! With English Language Learners, they learn through visuals. They often can not comprehend what a word or concept means unless I show them a visual - I usually draw it for them (which definitely isn't ideal!). The 3D printer will give my students objects that they can touch, feel, manipulate and explore. Learning new concepts will be SO much easier for them.
With your support, my students will have an invaluable tool in our classroom that will be used for years to come.
My students will be given the incredible advantage of being able to learn concepts in a hands-on manner. The sky is the limit with where this technology can take them! Myself, as well as my students, would be incredibly grateful to receive this 3D printer.
